ON SPATIALITY OF ANALOGUE AND DIGITAL IMAGE COLLECTIONS IN ARCHITECTURE
In the scientific paper, the phenomenon of collecting images in architecture – in its analogue and digital spatiality – is made comprehensible.
Due to the proceeding digitisation, which changes not only the architecture, but also its creative processes, the parallel instructive processes of architectural collecting are not taken into account. That means building up a collection lies in the responsibility and desire of the architect her/himself.
The work reveals how a image collection can become instructive for architectural creation with the help of its interlocking elements. The question focuses on the extent to which an analogue and digital spatiality of a collection has influence on its instructive character in the architectural creative process, and how productivity is related to the images effect and ultimately the topology of a collection.
On the basis of methodical research, an overview is given of the types of collecting in the architectural discipline with a differentiation between institutional and artistic collecting, the reproduction of empirical research carried out in the context of the work opens up contemporary trends in the handling of image collections among architecture students and graduates, as well as through a empirical study with own analysis of case studies, the act of collecting and the form of the collection become understandable in their methodological elements within their analogue or digital spatiality.
As a result, the images effect and topology of a collection are in constant dependence and presence on one another and therefore cannot be separated. Nevertheless, both parameters provide a differentiated motivation for the productivity of a collection. While a constituent collection lives from the holding together of the images through the effect of images, a servile collection is organised on the basis of a dominant topology.
The collection of images has an influence if it enables its own intervention or desired browsing. If it is an analogue or digital spatiality plays a significant role because both can only react to a limited extent to different requirements. A collection of imges can therefore only become instructive to the extent that its methodological elements allow it to be used in practice.
