WORK AS AN ARCHITECTURESTUDENT
A HOSTEL – TEMPORARY LIVING IN A LARGE, OPEN COMMUNITY FOR STUDENTS AND YOUNG ADULTS
What happens to the building in the city centre of Stuttgart, Naglerstraße ? = Hollowing + Refilling. The ground floor is not modified. From 1st floor and above parts of the floor slabs are taken out to refill the space with boxes. The boxes are fundamental elements of the hostel like BedBoxes, BathBoxes, KitchenBox, StorageBoxes. Room between boxes which results from box-leaps is community space.
CONCEPT: BOX
There are to towers of boxes – the ‚Bathroom’ and the ‚Bed‘ tower – which merge at the peak to its shared roof terrace. Different types of BedBoxes are single BedBox as well as double BedBox – separate beds or double bed – and a Box for four. Equally there is a set of BathBoxes, which are separated by shower and toilet. Storage and office Boxes are provided too; plus the KitchenBox.
CONCEPT: COMMUNITY AREAS
The areas between the boxes should be used as common space. Basis for this is the area on the 1st floor, which includes the seating and the KitchenBox. Towards the top, via stairs and, among other things, also via ladders, resulting surfaces can be reached, which are edged with nets to create an open „chill“ area.
CONCEPT: STAIRS
In order to reach the communal areas as well as the boxes, a network of stairs, podiums and bars extends between the boxes.
